Looks like President Obama intends to violate the War Powers Act vis a vis U.S. involvement in the NATO action in Libya.
One more brick in the edifice of the Imperial Presidency. I considered President Bush’s war in Iraq to be reckless, misconceived and ultimately dishonest — but Bush did get congressional authorization for his act.
Yale law professors Bruce Ackerman and Oona Hathaway wrote this week in the Washington Post: "If nothing happens, history will say that the War Powers Act was condemned a quiet death by a president who had solemnly pledged, on the campaign trail, to put an end to indiscriminate war making."
There you have it. From a Nobel Peace Prize honoree, no less.

We call our selves "free" in America yet we the people have absolutely no voice or vote when it comes to involvement in war, and to the impeachment of the man we voted in on all our hopes of "change". I wish he would become the man I voted for instead of the puppet he is!
ReplyDeleteObama fights the good fight, with true domestic bipartisan and global coalition support, in a limited and precise way, with other countries carrying most of the weight. I'll take that over Bush's unjust and unsupportable war conducted "legally" any day.

I am not foolish,naive,a rube nor a girl but you are obviously a pissed off republican by the statement you "revealed".
ReplyDeleteSince his election the President has demonstrated a growing fondness for the position of Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces.
ReplyDeleteAnd he's apparently discovered it is far easier to make war than to fix things at home like the economy, the national infrastructure, Social Security, and all those other domestic issues every presidential candidate trots out when they want our vote.
For those who voted for Obama believing he would draw down all those wars, and there are actually about 26 (overt, covert, clandestine) we are presently involved in worldwide, you "got fooled again" (Who's Next).
One of the many truly tragic aspects of our current national situation is that we don't know how to not make war any longer...it has become an aspect of our national identity and economy.
We might do well to consider this on Memorial Day.
